Rogue guide

Rogue rules include poisons not triggering against attackers, Sap not procing weapons and Cold Blood being consumed by Mutilate crits; levels above 30 are untested theorycraft.

At a glance

The Rogue is Forever's pure melee class: energy, combo points, Stealth and poisons, with no tank or healing spec.

How this works

Blizzard wants it to do the highest single-target damage in the game on fights where you stand still, with no hybrid tax. The beta gave it few new talents (nine; only the Mage got fewer) and cut a lot of base damage, but also some real quality-of-life wins: combo points survive a target switch, energy flows continuously, and Sap neither needs nor breaks Stealth. It brings Kick and the best crowd control of any melee, and no group buff.

What Forever changed

  • Combo points survive a target switch. They are lost only when you start building points on another enemy, so you can Kick or Gouge a second mob and come back to your finisher.
  • Energy regenerates continuously instead of in 2-second ticks. Blizzard plans no energy changes.
  • Sap no longer breaks Stealth, so you can Sap one mob and still open on another while hidden. It still needs Stealth. Improved Sap was removed because that is now baseline.
  • Expose Armor removes 2,250 armor at 5 points, the same as a full Sunder Armor. Improved Expose Armor now saves energy and refunds combo points instead of adding armor reduction.
  • Mutilate is Assassination's 21-point talent and needs daggers. Venom, a poison-boosting finisher, is the new Assassination 31-point talent.
  • Hack and Slash replaces the four weapon specializations, so Combat takes whatever weapon drops. Rogues can now use one-handed axes.
  • Base damage cut: Backstab, Rupture and every poison do a third or more less than Classic. Only rank 6 of Eviscerate changed. Poisons can crit, and carry about 50% more charges.
  • Poisons and Lockpicking are separate skill lines with their own spellbook tabs. The client lists Pick Lock at level 1, but Classic's client does too, so its Forever learn level is unconfirmed.
  • Hemorrhage and Improved Kidney Shot boost only your own damage now; neither is a group debuff.
  • Every tree has a one-point milestone talent at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points; Subtlety has two at 21 (Preparation and Hemorrhage). Blizzard has announced that Death Mark will replace Thousand Cuts as the Subtlety 31-point talent; it isn't in the 70205 client yet.

Every abilitie, new and changed ones marked, by spec: Assassination, Combat, Subtlety.

Strengths

  • Kick, plus Sap, Blind, Gouge, Cheap Shot and Kidney Shot: the most control of any melee class, and Forever's dungeons lean on crowd control.
  • Stealth past trash to quest objectives and dungeon bosses; Distract now also lowers enemies' Stealth detection.
  • No ammo, no shards, no pet. Poisons are the only chore, and they now carry more charges.
  • Combat is weapon-agnostic thanks to Hack and Slash, and Blade Flurry gives it a real two-target cleave.
  • Blizzard's stated aim: top single-target damage, with no hybrid tax.

Gaps you plan around

  • No group buff and no dispel, heal or resurrection. Its old raid debuffs are personal now, and Expose Armor only matches a Warrior's Sunder.
  • No self-healing: you eat between pulls, and you need a partner who tanks or heals for groups.
  • Until the known issue is fixed, enemies can parry and block from behind at close range, which hurts Backstab and Ambush most.
  • Many small nerfs (Mutilate dagger-only at 75% weapon damage, Opportunity halved, Vigor now two points for the same 10 energy) have left beta players lukewarm.

Races

RaceFaction What it brings a Rogue
HumanAllianceRuthless: +2% critical strike chance, whatever you hold. Will to Survive breaks stuns (PvP). The Alliance Combat pick; the sword is no longer needed for the racial.
DwarfAllianceStoneform removes bleeds, poisons and diseases and cuts physical damage 10% for 8 sec. Earth Fury: +2% critical damage and healing. Find Treasure also finds extra items in most chests.
Night ElfAllianceQuickness makes your Stealth count one level higher, and its run-speed bonus now stacks with other speed boosts; Shadowmeld works in combat as a threat drop; Elune's Light gives +10% crit for 15 sec.
GnomeAllianceExpansive Mind: +5% maximum energy. Eureka! (an 8-second buff, no charges) makes your damaging abilities cost 10% less and hit 10% harder, but not bleeds or poison ticks, and it does not work correctly from Stealth or invisibility (known issue). Escape Artist breaks snares.
Skyborne (High Order)AllianceNew race, needs the Skyborne Heroic Pack; starts on Zephras Isle (1–12) with its own Rogue quest. Wind Blessed: +3% haste. Skysight and Read Leyline can be cast while moving.
OrcHordeBlood Fury: +10% attack power for 15 sec (cooldown 3 minutes). Savage: +1% critical strike chance. Hardiness shortens stuns.
UndeadHordeWill of the Forsaken breaks fear, charm and sleep; Touch of the Grave drains health on hits, and Touch of the Dead procs 20% of the time for Rogues on a 25-second internal cooldown; Cannibalize heals between pulls.
TrollHordeBerserking: +10% attack speed for 10 sec. Regeneration is 20%. Beast Slaying (+5% vs Beasts) and Rapid Regeneration for downtime.
Skyborne (Windshaper)HordeNew race, Skyborne Heroic Pack; starts on Zephras Isle. Wind Blessed +3% haste; Skysight speeds you up and can be cast while moving. Shenthul in Orgrimmar trains Skyborne (Windshaper) (listed under Professions, so probably Poisons and Lockpicking).

How to read the labels

Outlined labels say how sure a claim is:

  • Live in beta in a beta build, with its date
  • Announced Blizzard said so; not in a build yet
  • Unconfirmed in client data or one guide only
  • Rumoured no primary source
  • Classic Classic Era behaviour no Forever source confirms or contradicts

Filled labels say what changed since Classic Era:

  • Changed numbers or effects differ from Classic Era
  • Reworded the client marks it changed but lists no difference; usually tooltip wording
  • Talent comes from a talent
  • As Classic as in Classic Era
