Priest guide

Levels above 30 are untested theorycraft.

Client build 1.60.1.70425 · updated

At a glance

The Priest is Forever's pure healer with a Shadow damage spec, and it is a better healer and duo partner than in Classic.

How this works

Discipline gets Penance and stronger shields, Holy gets Binding Heal and Prayer of Mending, and every Priest now has Fear Ward, Devouring Plague and Shadow Word: Death. The cost is the same as ever: levelling before 40 leans on the wand, and Smite and Holy Fire now do about half their Classic base damage. Blizzard's own split: Discipline is better at keeping one target alive, Holy at healing the whole party, and Shadow is brought for its damage.

What Forever changed

  • Penance is a new Discipline 21-point talent, reachable at the beta cap of 30: three bolts over 2 seconds that heal a friend or hit an enemy.
  • Binding Heal (Holy 16, learned at 25) heals you and your target at once; Prayer of Mending (Holy 31) jumps around the party.
  • Fear Ward and Devouring Plague are for every race at 20, Divine Spirit is trained at 30, and Shadow Word: Death is new at 32.
  • Prayer of Healing heals the target's party, pets included. Several Priests' Renews can sit on one target, and Renew can crit.
  • Power Word: Fortitude and Divine Spirit last 1 hour; Fortitude gives +70 Stamina at top rank (Classic 54).
  • Smite and Holy Fire hit about half as hard as in Classic from the middle ranks up (client 70205), so Smite Discipline needs spell power to work.
  • Shadowform gives +10% Shadow damage (Classic 15%), halves Shadow spell costs and doubles the Shadow crit bonus. It still blocks every healing spell but now allows Holy damage spells.
  • Shadow Weaving is now a personal +2% per stack buff: a Shadow Priest no longer raises a Warlock's damage. Vampiric Embrace is a 30-second party heal on a 30-second cooldown, so it can run all the time.
  • Meditation keeps 50% of mana regeneration going while casting (Classic 15%), and Spirit Tap 5/5 always procs and does the same for 15 seconds.
  • Every race keeps two racial Priest spells, several of them new: Human Divine Grace, Dwarf Chastise, Gnome Confounding Flash and Contingency Plan, Undead Dark Sacrifice.
  • Low ranks far below your level get less from healing power and proc talents less often, so Classic-style downranking costs more.

Every spell, new and changed ones marked, by spec: Discipline, Holy, Shadow.

Strengths

  • Three real roles: two full healers with dispels and Fear Ward, and a ranged damage spec with a party heal.
  • Discipline's shields, Penance and Soul Warding (Shield with no cooldown) make Discipline the Priest spec for keeping one target alive: Blizzard says its shields are stronger than Holy's and it is 'probably a little better at keeping a tank alive' (podcast ep. 2).
  • Mana is much easier than in Classic: Meditation and Spirit Tap both keep regeneration going while you cast.
  • Shields, Renew and heals land on pets, and Prayer of Healing reaches them: a Priest can keep a Voidwalker or Hunter pet alive.
  • Fortitude justifies a Priest in any group; Fear Ward from every race; Silence for Shadow.

Gaps you plan around

  • Slow, wand-heavy levelling before 40. Players report doing less damage with spells than with the wand at 6–16; Shadowform, the fix, is level 40. The wand also needs you to stand still for half a second before it fires.
  • No curse or poison removal. A Druid covers both; a Mage covers curses; a Shaman or Paladin covers poison.
  • Only Shadow can interrupt (Silence, from 30). Discipline and Holy have none.
  • Shadowform blocks every heal, so a Shadow Priest has to drop form to heal from 40.
  • No party mana return from Shadow by design, and Shadow pays the hybrid tax: about 5% below pure damage classes.

Races

RaceFaction What it brings a Priest
HumanAllianceDivine Grace: an instant save on a friend below 50% that also clears Weakened Soul (10-minute cooldown in the client). Feedback is now cheap. +5% Spirit; Sword Specialization does nothing for a Priest. Rated the weakest Alliance Priest.
DwarfAllianceDesperate Prayer (now Dwarf only) and Chastise, a 2-second root. Stoneform removes poisons and bleeds and cuts physical damage 10%.
Night ElfAllianceStarshards does about twice its Classic damage on a 30 s cooldown: real levelling damage for a Holy or Discipline Priest. Elune's Grace halves the chance melee and ranged attacks hit you (15 s or 3 misses), Elune's Light adds 10% crit for 15 s, and Shadowmeld drops threat. The Alliance pick, especially for Shadow.
GnomeAllianceNew Priest race. Contingency Plan is a pre-placed safety net on your partner (10-minute cooldown in the client), Confounding Flash a 5-target confuse. Eureka! is an 8-second buff that also boosts Power Word: Shield; it skips Renew and DoTs.
UndeadHordeThe clear Horde pick. Dark Sacrifice turns health into mana, Cannibalize restores health and mana between pulls, and Will of the Forsaken breaks fear. Touch of Weakness now takes up to 204 attack power off a melee attacker.
TrollHordeHex of Weakness now takes up to −204 melee attack power and −20% healing taken. Shadowguard (3 charges of no-threat damage, 10 minutes) and Berserking (10% cast and attack speed for 10 s) round it out. Regeneration gives 20% health regeneration bonuses. Behind Undead for a healer.

How to read the labels

Outlined labels say how sure a claim is:

  • Live in beta in a beta build, with its date
  • Announced Blizzard said so; not in a build yet
  • Unconfirmed in client data or one guide only
  • Rumoured no primary source
  • Classic Classic Era behaviour no Forever source confirms or contradicts

Filled labels say what changed since Classic Era:

  • New not in Classic Era
  • Changed numbers or effects differ from Classic Era
  • Now baseline was a talent in Classic Era, now trained
  • Racial only some races get it
  • Talent comes from a talent
  • As Classic as in Classic Era
