Hunter: Pets

Client build 1.60.1.70425 · updated

How pets work in Forever, every family, who teaches each ability, and a taming route from 10 to 60 for your faction.

How this works

The beta stops at 30; everything above it is Classic data, so check it when the cap rises.

Your faction

How pets work in Forever

Taming

  • You learn Tame Beast from the level-10 Hunter quest in your start zone.
  • You can only tame a beast at or below your own level. "Up to two levels above you" no longer applies.
  • The pet keeps the beast's level and earns XP until it catches up with you. Tame a teacher at or near your level, or it can't use the rank you want from it yet.
  • Each family has a diet. Boars and bears eat almost anything; cats, wolves and raptors eat only meat or fish.

Learning abilities

  • Tame a beast that knows the ability, fight with it until you get the "You have learned" message, then teach it to your main pet through Beast Training.
  • Learning is for good. Every current and future pet of a family that can use the ability gets it.
  • A rank costs training points (TP), and the pet must have reached the rank's pet level. TP grows with pet level and loyalty.
  • Growl ranks cost 0 TP. Buy them from a pet trainer at pet levels 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 (trainers are listed below).
  • Skip Cower. It drops the pet's threat, which works against a pet tanking for a healer, and every rank costs 8–18 TP.

Stats and speed

  • Pets inherit your stats. A pet gets 2 Health per point of your Stamina, 30% of your armour, 10% of your attack power, all of your crit chance, and your hit chance.
  • The inherited stats only refresh after a relog or a trip through the stable.
  • Attack speed comes with the beast. It ranges from 1.0 to 2.7 sec, and damage isn't normalised, so a faster beast does more damage. In beta tests a level-20 cat did 26.8 DPS at 2.0 sec and 38 at 1.2 sec.
  • Player buffs that raise stats (Mark of the Wild, scrolls) don't land on a Hunter pet. Other players' heals do.

Stable and care

  • The stable holds one pet out and two stabled. The first slot costs 1 s and the second about 5 g, so buy it early. Blizzard says more slots are coming.
  • Stable the main pet before you tame anything. Taming needs an empty slot, and abandoning by mistake loses the pet for good.
  • Relog bug (open): a pet can lose its unique abilities after a relog, dismissal or flight path. Don't log out or fly with a half-learned teacher out.
  • Happiness still sets damage at 75%, 100% or 125%. It decays much more slowly than in Classic. Pets despawn beyond about 100 yards.

Pet trainers

  • Stormwind: Alma Deering (Old Town), Karrina Mekenda (Dwarven District)
  • Ironforge: Belia Thundergranite (Hall of Arms)
  • Darnassus: Silvaria (Cenarion Enclave)
  • Loch Modan: Claude Erksine (Farstrider Lodge)
  • Ashenvale: Bolyun (Bolyun's Camp)
  • None in Goldshire, Kharanos or Dolanaar. Classic roster; Forever unconfirmed.

Pet trainers

  • Razor Hill: Harruk
  • Orgrimmar: Drukma (Hunter's Hall)
  • Bloodhoof Village: Reban Freerunner
  • Thunder Bluff: Hesuwa Thunderhorn (Hunter Rise)
  • Stranglethorn: Zudd (Grom'gol Base Camp)
  • Swamp of Sorrows: Grokor (Stonard)
  • None in the Crossroads or the Sepulcher. Classic roster; Forever unconfirmed.

Signature abilities

  • Every family gets Bite or Claw, Dash or Dive, and one signature ability (the families table below).
  • The nine new signatures have no known teacher yet: Sonic Blast, Swipe, Mine!, Pinch, Dismember, Tendon Rip, Savage Rend, Web and Dust Cloud. They are listed at 0 TP. Either they come with the tame or the data hasn't caught up.
  • Dash and Dive arrive at pet level 30. Prowl and Thunderstomp also start at 30.
  • Known bugs: the Skyborne Fox can't be trained and loses its abilities on relog.

The swap, every time

Stable the main pet → tame the teacher → fight until "You have learned" → abandon the teacher → take the main pet out → Beast Training. Never fly or log out with a half-learned teacher out (relog bug).

Taming route, 1–60 Alliance

Zones follow the Alliance levelling route. Stable masters are at each town's inn or nearby.

1–9Start

Start zone: note the teachers, no pet yet

You can't tame before the level-10 quest. Level normally and notice where the rank-1 teachers live, because you'll come back for some.

Teachers nearby
  • Charge 1: Young Thistle Boar (Teldrassil, 1–2) or Small Crag Boar (Dun Morogh, 3)
  • Claw 1: Strigid Owl (Teldrassil, 5–6) or Ice Claw Bear (Dun Morogh, 7–8)
  • Bite 1: Forest Spider (Elwynn, 5–6) or Snow Tracker Wolf (Dun Morogh, 6–7)
10Lv 10

Taming the Beast, then your first real pet

The class quest has you tame three beasts in turn. Keep the last one only until you have tamed the pet you actually want.

Human
Quest from Josephine Carson, Elwynn. Elwynn has no cats: take a Prowler (wolf, 9–10, 1.5 sec, Bite 2) as the main pet, or Mother Fang (rare spider, 10) for the look.
Dwarf
Quest from Grif Wildheart, Kharanos. Take Ghostfang (new rare cat, 10, player report) if it is up, else a Juvenile Snow Leopard (cat, 5–6, 1.5 sec). Timber (rare wolf, 10) teaches Bite 2.
Night Elf
Quest from Dazalar, Dolanaar. Take Duskstalker (rare cat, 9, 1.4 sec) or an Elder Nightsaber (8–9, 1.4 sec).
Skyborne (High Order)
Quest from Quel'ana Quickgale, Valanaar. The Vuldren Alpha Fox is a temporary quest pet and doesn't stay. For a Fox, tame a wild Vuldren on the isle afterwards; it can't be trained yet and loses abilities on relog, so it's a stable-slot look, not the main pet.
Stable at
Erma (~43,66) in Goldshire; Shelby Stoneflint in Kharanos; Seriadne in Dolanaar. Zephras Isle's stable is unconfirmed
10–12Rank 2

Rank 2s before you leave the start zone

These are cheap and close. Stable the main pet at the inn first, tame the teacher, fight until it learns, abandon it, and take the main pet back out.

Tame
  • Bite 2: Starving Winter Wolf (Dun Morogh, 8–9), Prowler (Elwynn, 9–10) or Webwood Silkspinner (Teldrassil, 8–9)
  • Claw 2: Strigid Hunter (Teldrassil, 8–9), Young Forest Bear (Elwynn, 8–9), or Bjarn (rare, Dun Morogh, 12)
  • Charge 1, only if you'll ever use a Boar: any young boar
Buy
The second stable slot (about 5 g) as soon as you can afford it.
12–16Cat

Darkshore: the first fast cat

Darkshore's Moonstalkers swing at 1.3 sec, the best speed the Alliance can reach before 20.

Go to
Darkshore (from Darnassus, or the boat from Menethil)
Stable first
Jaelysia in Auberdine
Tame
  • Moonstalker Runt (cat, 10–11, 1.3 sec) as the new main pet. It comes with Cower 1, so untrain or turn it off.
  • Furious Howl 1 later in Westfall: Coyote Packleader (11–12), unconfirmed: a Prairie Wolf Alpha, listed with the same rank, had none in the beta
  • Charge 2 in Westfall: Young Goretusk (12–13), for a Boar only
Then
Teach Claw 2 and Bite 2 to the cat. Cats do learn Bite 2; Bite 3 on a cat is untested.
16–20Rank 3

Loch Modan: rank 3s

Stable first
Lina Hearthstove in Thelsamar
Tame
  • Claw 3: Black Bear Patriarch (16–17)
  • Bite 3: Wood Lurker (17–18), for a wolf or boar
  • Look-only rares: Lord Condar (vulture, 15–16), Ol' Sooty (elite bear, 20, also Claw 3), Large Loch Crocolisk (22)
Upgrade
Moonstalker Sire (Darkshore, 17–18, 1.3 sec) keeps the same speed at a higher level.
20–25Rank 4

Who teaches each ability

The first teacher is the lowest-level one in your faction's or contested zones; dungeon beasts come last. Rows above your level are dimmed. Coordinates and spawn details for rares are under Rare pets. Cower is left in for completeness: skip it.
