Lore
Alterac was one of the seven human nations of the Alliance of Lordaeron, and its weakest member. In the Second War, King Aiden Perenolde lost hope of a human victory and secretly struck a deal with the Horde, letting the orcs through his mountain passes and showing them how to avoid Alliance defenses.
Once the treason was exposed, Terenas of Lordaeron declared martial law and Perenolde was deposed. Alterac passed under Alliance control, and Lordaeron moved to annex at least part of its mountains. Many scattered survivors later joined the Syndicate, a criminal group founded by Perenolde's heir Aliden.
The mountains also hold Alterac Valley, where the Stormpike Guard and the Frostwolf clan compete for control.
